Use Instrumentl's Quick find 🔍 feature to search our entire database for a particular funding opportunity, foundation or fellow nonprofit 'recipient'.

Instrumentl's database features:

Where to locate Quick find

Locate the Quick find search bar at the top-left of your screen, directly beneath the Instrumentl logo.

When the left sidebar is collapsed, the Quick find appears as a magnifying glass 🔍

How to conduct a search

  1. Click the Quick find search bar or the 🔍 button to open a pop-up window labeled "Lookup a funder or grant opportunity by name".

  2. By default, the filter is set to *AllFunders, Opportunities and *Recipients. Open the dropdown menu to narrow your search results (*Note: Recipient Profiles are available on the Standard Plan and above).

  3. If you filtered for 'All' or 'Funders & Opportunities', you'll first see active grants listed first under 'OPPORTUNITIES' and then '990 REPORTS' underneath.

You can tell which 990 Reports are Funders, Recipients or both. Look for the green 'Funder' and blue 'Recipient' next to the organization name.

As previously mentioned, you won't find "Funder results" (i.e., 990 Reports) for funders that don't submit 990s to the IRS (e.g., government entities, corporations). However, you can still search for these funders under 'All' or 'Funders & Opportunities' to surface their active grants.

4. Click the result to open up the corresponding 990 Report (Funder and/or Recipient Profile) or grant/opportunity.

Tip: If you can't find what you're looking for, try making small alterations to your query, as funders may have registered with the IRS under a slightly different name. For instance, if you're searching for the XX Foundation, try replacing the term 'Foundation' with alternatives such as 'Trust', 'Charitable Foundation', or 'Fund'. You can also paste the foundation's EIN into Quick find to easily pull up the funder.

Missing Opportunity

If you can't find a particular active grant (only those open to apply—we don't add "invite-only" grants to our database), reach out to our Support via the chat bubble or email hello@instrumentl.com.

If you want to add a funding opportunity that doesn't qualify for our database (e.g., an invite-only grant), you can still add it to your Tracker. At the bottom of your Quick find search results, select + Add "[what you searched for]" as a New Funder or Opportunity. Learn more about adding external grants to your Tracker here.

Missing Funder

If you're looking for a corporate or government funder, you will not find a Funder 990 Report—only active grants from these funders are in our database. Learn more about which funders are in our database here.

Not sure if a funder files 990s? Check the IRS search tool! You can search by name or EIN.

If you see a foundation in the IRS database but don't see it in Quick find, let us know via the chat bubble or by emailing hello@instrumentl.com.

Save to your project Tracker

Save an Opportunity

If you're ready to save the grant you searched for, scroll to the bottom of the opportunity page and select ❤️ Save.

Opportunity Notes

Near the Save button at the bottom of the grant page, you can enter Opportunity Notes. These notes are stored only if you save the opportunity to a project.

"Save" a Funder

The Instrumentl Tracker is designed for opportunities only, so you cannot technically save a funder to your Tracker in the same way that you save a grant. However, you can add a "custom opportunity" from a funder to your Tracker as a placeholder, in essence, "saving" the funder to your project. Saving a Funder Match works the same way.

To do so from a funder's 990 Report, in the Saved Opportunities section, select + Add New.

Read here for more details around "custom grants".

Quick find is an excellent way to locate a funder, grant opportunity, or 501c3 nonprofit recipient in our database. Looking for ways to research a funder's Form 990? Read more about that here.
