Instrumentl provides you with a comprehensive list of Opportunity (Grant) Matches. Filtering those matches by past giving (location) can help you identify funding opportunities that best fit your organization.

The 'Past Giving' filters narrow down your matches to funders who have historically awarded grants to nonprofits in the same location as your organization and/or where your project takes place.
Note: Filtering by past giving is a feature available on our Discover Plan and higher.
Locations of project/work vs residency
Instrumentl considers two types of location when matching you to grants and funders: project (or work) location and residency location.
Residency location
The location of residency is where your organization (or your client’s organization) is physically based or registered.
Nonprofit Plan
For those with nonprofit accounts, you can find and edit your location of residency by going to Account > Organization Profile.
Your nonprofit organization may have more than one physical location, which can be accounted for by adding 2+ residency locations, as shown below.
To add additional locations of residency, select + Add county or state (if inside the US) or + Add country or continent (if outside the US). To remove a location, click the ✖️ button next to the location's name.
Consultant Plan
If you’re a consultant, each of your clients will have their own location(s) of residency. To find and edit these, go to Account > Client Profiles.
Each of our client profiles will have its respective residency location listed.
To make changes, like adding or removing locations of residency, select the "edit" button (✎) in the row that corresponds to the client in question.
Project/Work location
The project or work location describes where the nonprofit’s project is taking place. You can think of it as a program's geographic service area(s).
To view or make changes to a project's location, open up the Project Actions menu by clicking on the vertical three-dot button next to the project's name listed on the left side, and then select Edit.
Alternatively, once you're within a particular project (Tracker, Matches, Awards, Tasks or Calendar views), you can select Edit Project in the top-right-hand corner.
Toggle to the '2. Matches Setup', scroll down to 'Which areas does your project serve?', and you'll see the project's location(s). Just like with the location of residence, your project may take place in more than one location, as in the example below.
Add and remove project/work locations the same way you do for residency locations, as explained above.
How do the past giving filters work?
When reviewing the Opportunity Matches for your project, open up the Filter and scroll down to Past Giving.
You’ll see two filters: 'Past giving to orgs with my location of project' and 'Past giving to orgs with my location of residency'. Either filter will narrow your results to funders that have given to at least one nonprofit with a project/work location(s) or residency location(s) that you share.
If you select both 'Past giving to orgs with my location of project' and 'Past giving to orgs with my location of residency,' this works as an "or statement". This means your Opportunity Matches will filter down to grants with funders who've either given to one of your project/work locations or one of your residency locations.
Tip: Notice how hovering over the "information" ℹ️ icon shows the past locations included in this filter. In the example below, hovering over the 'Past giving to orgs with my location of residency' shows Kings County, NY -- the location of residency of this nonprofit:
This will filter down to all Opportunity Matches from funders that have awarded nonprofits with a residence in Kings County, NY. These could be great fit prospects since there's precedent for funders' giving in this nonprofit's location.
Filtering by past giving location will enhance your prospecting by quickly surfacing Opportunity Matches from funders who have previously awarded nonprofits in your specific location. Want to further level up your prospecting by analyzing peer organizations? Learn more here.
