Instrumentl's AI-powered Apply tool helps Nonprofit users streamline grant writing by automating the labor-intensive aspects of writing grant applications, such as looking through your documents for the right information, drafting compelling narratives, and formatting proposals to match application specifications.

Getting Started With Apply

Update Your Opportunity Status

Move your opportunity status from “Researching” to “Planned” or any other status to see available next steps for your application.

Request or Start Applications

If an application for an opportunity is not already available, you will see a Request Application button at the top of the opportunity screen under Funding Opportunity. We currently have a turn-around time of 2 business days to create your requested applications! We will upload the application directly from the funder to the Instrumentl Opportunity.

We will notify you once the application is uploaded, and then you will see the option to Start Application. Select Start (or Continue Application if you have already started) to access the application.

Upload Your Past Proposals

To get the best results from the AI Grant Writer, we recommend uploading at least five past proposals per program or project in question/answer format. The documents must be in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format to be searchable by our AI.

Once you enter into the application, you can select documents that are already uploaded to your Instrumentl account using the checkboxes, or select 'Upload Additional Documents' to use for this proposal.

You're Ready to Start Writing!

On the right-hand side of the application, you can find the AI-generated suggestions and add them into the question answer field by selecting "+ Add". Once you start adding in your answers, the application will automatically save so that you exit and continue right where you left off.


As you fill in information, you can use AI tools like “Shorten, Simplify, or Meet Word Count” to match specifications in formatting.

At any point, you can select "Improve Recommendations" to further refine your search by selecting or adding in additional documents for the AI to bring up results from.

Finalize and Submit!

Once you've added in your responses, you can download your application, share it out with colleagues to continue collaborating, make final edits, and submit on the funder website with any attachments specified by the funder!

FAQ

  1. Can you retrieve applications that are invite-only or require a password to access?

    1. Yes! We will reach out to the funder directly to obtain access.

  2. Are there any types of grants the AI grant writer is not compatible with?

    1. At the moment, State and Federal Grants are not available for AI recommendations.

  3. Is this available to Consultants?

    1. This tool is not yet available on consultant plans due to the way the AI tool reads language from the document library.
