Overview
Instrumentl's new Discover experience (beta) is an updated grant-matching experience that replaces keyword-based project setup with a guided, AI-powered flow. Instead of selecting fields of work (i.e., keywords) manually, you describe your project as you would to a colleague — and the Prospecting Assistant handles the rest.
The new Instrumentl Discover now has a revamped Matches view, with the Prospecting Assistant there to refine your project's matched grants in real time using plain language.
Availability
The new Discover experience (beta) is available to free trial users, as well as to customers subscribed to the Discover Plan and higher (and to select legacy plans).
How to access new Discover
There are two ways to get into the new Discover experience, depending on whether you're starting fresh or working from an existing project.
Option A: New project
From the left nav, select + New next to Projects.
On the project creation screen, select Try the new Discover.
Option B: Existing project
To switch an existing project to the new Discover experience, select the vertical 3-dot menu next to the project name in the left nav, then choose Switch to the new Discover.
⚠️ Note: Switching an existing project will move it to a draft state until you complete the new Discover setup flow. Your Tracker data — saved opportunities, tasks, and documents — will remain intact. Once switched, the project cannot be reverted to the classic setup.
Set up your project
Once you're in the new Discover experience, the Prospecting Assistant will guide you through a short setup flow to build your project's match criteria.
Step 1: Describe your project
When prompted, enter a description of the specific program or project you're raising funds for. Write it the way you'd explain it to a colleague — include what your program does, who it serves, and what outcomes you're working toward.
The Assistant will review your description and may ask a clarifying follow-up question before moving on.
Step 2: Select your organization type
Choose the option that best describes your organization. If your organization has a religious affiliation, select Yes when prompted.
Step 3: Choose your funding use
Select all the ways you plan to use grant funding. You can choose more than one.
Step 4: Choose your funder types
Specify which funder types you want to include — private foundations, corporate, state/local government, or federal. You can exclude any that aren't a fit.
Step 5: Set your grant size
Tell the Assistant your preferred grant range. You can type a minimum, a maximum, or both — or let the Assistant know you're open to any amount.
You're all set! Once the Assistant has collected your inputs, it will begin preparing your matches. It shouldn't take long to load, but while you wait, you can check out the focus, beneficiaries and work location(s).
The new Matches view
Once finished loading, you'll be in the Matches view for your project. Here, you can see your project criteria at the top.
Grant matches
Your matches will be listed on the left side, sorted by best match as a default.
On the right-hand side, you can view the project setup chat with the Prospecting Assistant — this is dynamic, meaning you can continue to chat with the Assistant even after setting up your project. Read below how to refine and edit your project using this Assistant interface.
To close the chat interface with the Prospecting Assistant, click the ✦ in the top-right corner of the Matches view, or the X button at the top of the Assistant window.
Now, when you click on a grant listed among your matches, the opportunity page and funder profile (990 report) will load "full screen" (with the exception of the left nav sidebar and the Assistant chat window when either or both are not in a collapsed state).
To return to your list of matches, select Match list written above the funding opportunity tab.
Funder matches
To view your funder matches, click the Funders tab located between 'Grants' and 'Hidden' right underneath the criteria near the top of your Matches view.
The columns in the funder matches tab include: Funder name, giving rate to new grantees (%), median grant amount ($) and past grantees located.
Note: Refining funder matches is not yet possible using the Assistant chat interface. If you try to use the Assistant to update your funder matches, you'll see this:
Instead, use the filters/criteria listed at the top of the funders list to update your funder matches.
When you click on a funder match, you'll see the full 990 report populate. Select Match list near the top to return to your matches.
Refining your grant matches
After your project is created, you can use the Prospecting Assistant in the Matches view to update your filters using plain language — no need to dig through dropdown menus.
If you don't see the right-side chat window with the Assistant, select the ✦ icon in the top-right corner of the Matches view.
Some examples of how you can refine your matches include:
Funding use
You can tell the Assistant to add or remove funding uses.
To view the funding uses, open up the project details with the 🔍 magnifying glass icon.
Work location
Add or change a work location ("add Woodford County", e.g.).
You can verify (and manually adjust) the added work location(s).
Timeline and confirmed deadlines
Adjust the timeline and deadline confirmation criteria ("Filter for grants with confirmed deadlines no sooner than 30 days from today", e.g.).
The new deadline parameters and filter for only confirmed deadlines can likewise be verified and adjusted manually using the clickable criteria above your listed matches.
Funder type
Update funder type ("Exclude corporate funders", e.g.).
Here are the funder preferences criteria, which you can adjust manually.
Grant size
Set a grant size range.
View the adjusted grant size criteria and edit as needed.
Miscellaneous refinements
You can ask the Assistant to narrow the matches using criteria not listed among the defaults at the top of your view. For example, you can apply past giving filters based on work or residency location.
Refinements that don't necessarily have a designated criterion listed timeline, grant size, funder type) are listed near the other criteria.
The Assistant will confirm each change and update your matches in real time. If a request is ambiguous, it will ask a clarifying question before applying any changes.
More filters
If you click the More dropdown criteria, you can see several filters, such as gives to peers, saved or hidden on other projects, deadlines (confirmed only), and past giving.
Project focus and beneficiaries
Currently, the project focus and beneficiaries sections cannot be updated via the Assistant interface. Rather, you can edit those text fields directly from the project details dropdown criteria at the top of your matches:
When you're ready to update your matches after changing your project focus and/or beneficiaries, select Apply.

To cancel the edits, choose Discard.
Note: With the new Discover, navigating to Project Actions and selecting Edit Match Criteria will take you directly to your Matches view, where you update match criteria using the Prospecting Assistant. In other words, you can go to the same place with fewer clicks by just selecting the project from your left nav sidebar.
Edit project settings
To view and adjust a project's settings, open the Project Actions menu for the project in question from the left nav sidebar. Next, select Edit Project settings.
Alternatively, if you're within one of the project's "views" (Tracker, Matches, e.g.), select the ⚙️ gear icon in the top-right corner of the screen to open the Project Details menu. Next, select Project settings.
The project settings window will slide into view from the right side. Here, you can change the project color, name, type (matches & tracking vs. tracking only) and lead (or client profile for consultant accounts).
Delete a project
The project settings window is also one of the places where you can delete a project. The other ways to access the project deletion options are via the Project Actions and Project Details dropdown menus (see screenshots above).
⚠️ Note: Deleting a project queues the project data for deletion. Once you delete a project, there is no guarantee we can retrieve its data. "Archiving" or "temporary" removal of projects is not supported at this time.
Review a match
Reviewing matches looks the same as before — the same field for opportunity notes and the same buttons for saving and hiding matches.
As a recap, when reviewing your matches, you can save grants you want to explore further and hide ones you don’t plan to pursue, helping you keep your funding pipeline organized and focused.
Tip: Before you save or hide a grant, leave an opportunity note for your team's reference when reviewing it later in your tracker (or hidden list).
