The Instrumentl Claude connector brings your grant data directly into Claude — Anthropic's AI assistant — so you can explore matches, surface insights, and make faster, more informed prospecting decisions without ever leaving your conversation. By connecting your account, you can ask Claude to pull up your projects, list ranked grant matches, save opportunities to your tracker, and create an analysis of a particular grant match's fit for your specific project and organization.

This connector is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for securely connecting AI tools to external services on your behalf.

The Instrumentl Claude connector is available to all accounts with active subscriptions (regardless of plan) or active free trials.

Accounts in Maintenance Mode will not have access.

When you connect via the MCP, Claude isn't working from a generic search or a broad database. It's working from the opportunities in Instrumentl — based on a decade of funder data, and validated by our expert team. You can chat with Claude to sort, prioritize, look up info on, or create assets from the matches you’ve added to projects and vetted for fit. And if you decide while working in Claude you’d like to save or hide a match, you can push that decision back to Instrumentl.

A few examples of ways you can use the connector:

Follow these steps to set up the Instrumentl Claude connector either on the desktop app or at claude.ai in your browser.

1. Once logged in to your Claude account, select Customize from the left sidebar.

2. Select Connectors.

3. Click the ➕ ("plus" button).

4. Search for 'Instrumentl' and select the connector, as shown below. Here's the link that takes you directly to the Instrumentl connector in Claude!

5. Click Connect.

6. You'll be redirected to Instrumentl to log in and authorize access via OAuth. Sign in with your Instrumentl credentials.

7. Select the account to connect to Claude and select Authorize.

8. Once authorized, return to the Claude desktop app or website.

You may disconnect Claude's access to your Instrumentl account at any time. Simply return to Customize > Connectors in Claude > search for/select Instrumentl > Disconnect.

Claude has several built-in tools. You can view and manage these in the Instrumentl connector settings within Claude. These tools are described in plain language in this section with examples of what you can ask Claude.

Ask Claude to pull up your Instrumentl projects. It returns up to 20 at a time in a table showing project name and creation date, then offers to pull the next batch or dig into matches for any specific project.

Try asking: "Show me 20 of my projects from Instrumentl."

Ask Claude to show ranked matches for any of your active projects. Results are sorted by match score by default and include grant name, funder, and next deadline. After returning results, Claude will proactively flag items worth your attention, such as deadlines approaching soonest, tied scores among top matches, or geographic restrictions that may affect eligibility.

Try asking: "Show the top 10 matches for the project [enter project name]."

Ask Claude about any grant match. This includes the funder's background, what they fund, priority areas, eligibility requirements, eligible locations, and upcoming deadlines.

Try asking: "Tell me about the [enter funding opportunity name]."

Ask Claude to save a grant match.

Try asking: "Save the match, [enter funding opportunity name]."

Ask Claude to hide a funding opportunity that it saved earlier in the session. This will remove the saved grant from your project tracker.

Try asking: "Hide the grant you saved earlier: [funding opportunity name]."

Ask Claude to gather high-level information about your Instrumentl account, such as the Account ID, org name, org type, date created and last updated, and the account owner ("Account Manager" as referred to by Claude).

Try asking: "Tell me about my Instrumentl account."

When you ask Claude to list saved grants for a specific project, it will surface matches for that project that are saved to other projects rather than pull grants saved to the requested project tracker.

This is a current limitation of the connector's underlying tools, which don't yet filter saved grants by project. Use your Tracker as the source of truth for project-specific saved grants and workload planning.

When Claude lists upcoming deadlines or sorts grants saved to your Tracker (all projects) by deadline, it surfaces the next available cycle for each grant — not the cycle you've indicated for that saved opportunity. This means grants you've already applied to, won, or abandoned may appear alongside active opportunities, since Claude cannot read the Opportunity Status or "Your Cycle" data in your Tracker. Cross-reference any deadline list against your Tracker to confirm which opportunities are ones you're actively pursuing.

In this example, Claude would list this saved grant with an August 1, 2026, deadline, because that's the upcoming deadline for the current cycle. However, in the Tracker, this awarded grant is saved to FY 2024 and was for the Aug 1, 2024, cycle.

As mentioned above, Claude does not have access to the status or cycle data when getting saved grants from your account. When Claude reads your account's saved grants, it sees the official grant page info for each opportunity saved from the Instrumentl database (think: 'Funding Opportunity' tab of a saved grant), but not any of the data you've input into the 'Overview' tab, such as submission goal/date, notification date, amount requested, etc.

In this example, you see there are two saved opportunities/records in the Tracker for this grant. Claude will only list this grant once and ignore the cycle, listing it as June 4, 2027, rather than June 4, 2026, when the application was submitted.

Claude will not see 2+ records for the same grant, even if saved and duplicated on your account across different cycles and fiscal years — Claude will list the official grant once, with the soonest/upcoming deadline, regardless of status, cycle or the dates you entered.

The Instrumentl Claude connector has several read-only and write/delete tools. To manage these, go to Customize > Connectors > Instrumentl. By default, all tools will be configured to require approval upon every request.

You can manage each one individually and adjust permissions by type (e.g., always allow read-only tools).

Anthropic will prompt you when Claude wants to use a tool that "needs approval". You can choose to allow once or always allow.

Your pipeline is sensitive, with data on real funder relationships and context your team has built over time. A few things worth knowing about how the connector handles it:
