Instrumentl Claude connector

Learn how to connect your Instrumentl account to Claude and use AI to explore, filter and analyze your grant matches in real time

Written by Nate

The Instrumentl Claude connector brings your grant data directly into Claude — Anthropic's AI assistant — so you can explore matches, surface insights, and make faster, more informed prospecting decisions without ever leaving your conversation. By connecting your account, you can ask Claude to pull up your projects, review ranked grant matches, filter by deadline or status, and get full funder profiles complete with an analysis of fit for your specific project.

This connector is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for securely connecting AI tools to external services on your behalf.

Availability

The Instrumentl Claude connector is available to all accounts with active subscriptions (regardless of plan) or active free trials.

Accounts in Maintenance Mode will not have access.

Note: This is a distinct product surface from Instrumentl's API, which remains a feature exclusive to the Full Lifecycle, University and Enterprise Plans.

Value add

The Instrumentl Claude connector brings your matches into Claude.

When you connect via the MCP, Claude isn't working from a generic search or a broad database. It's working from the opportunities in Instrumentl — based on a decade of funder data, and validated by our expert team. You can chat with Claude to sort, prioritize, look up info on, or create assets from the matches you’ve added to projects and vetted for fit. And if you decide while working in Claude you’d like to save or hide a match, you can push that decision back to Instrumentl.

A few examples of ways you can use the connector:

  • Triage your pipeline without building a view. "Show me my saved grants with deadlines in September 2026 sorted by deadline." No filters, no exports. Claude pulls your actual saved grants and helps you work through them in plain language.

  • Turn opportunity review into a shareable doc. With Google Docs connected, ask Claude to summarize your top three matches for a project and draft a one-pager your executive director can review. Research meets a deliverable in one step.

  • Match your grants to your strategy. Drop your organization's strategic plan or program priorities into the chat alongside your Instrumentl data, and ask Claude to identify the matches that align best with them. It's the kind of cross-referencing that usually lives in a spreadsheet, or just in your head.

  • Stay ahead of deadlines. Ask Claude which of your saved matches have LOI deadlines in the next 60 days, then have it help you build a prep checklist or draft a calendar reminder for the strongest ones.

Capabilities

Claude has several built-in tools. You can view and manage these in the Instrumentl connector settings within Claude. These tools are described in plain language in this section with examples of what you can ask Claude.

List your projects

Ask Claude to pull up your Instrumentl projects. It returns up to 20 at a time in a table showing project name, status, and creation date, then offers to pull the next batch or dig into matches for any specific project.

Try asking: "Show me 20 of my projects from Instrumentl."

View grant matches for a project

Ask Claude to show ranked matches for any of your active projects. Results are sorted by match score by default and include grant name, funder, and next deadline. After returning results, Claude will proactively flag items worth your attention, such as deadlines approaching soonest, tied scores among top matches, or geographic restrictions that may affect eligibility.

Try asking: "Show the top 10 matches for the project [enter project name]."

Retrieve details on a specific grant match

Ask Claude about any grant match. This includes the funder's background, what they fund, priority areas, eligibility requirements, eligible locations, and upcoming deadlines.

Try asking: "Tell me about the [enter funding opportunity name]."

Save grant matches to your projects

Ask Claude to save a grant match.

Try asking: "Save the match, [enter funding opportunity name]."

Hide/Remove saved matches

Ask Claude to hide a funding opportunity that it saved earlier in the session. This will remove the saved grant from your project tracker.

Note: Claude cannot identify saved grants in your Tracker by name unless they were previously saved from your matches using the connector in the same chat session.

Try asking: "Hide the grant you saved earlier: [funding opportunity name]."

Fetch basic account information

Ask Claude to gather high-level information about your Instrumentl account, such as the Account ID, org name, org type, date created and last updated, and the account owner ("Account Manager" as referred to by Claude).

Try asking: "Tell me about my Instrumentl account."

Tool permissions

The Instrumentl Claude connector has several read-only and write/delete tools. To manage these, go to Customize > Connectors > Instrumentl. By default, all tools will be configured to require approval upon every request.

You can manage each one individually and adjust permissions by type (e.g., always allow read-only tools).

Anthropic will prompt you when Claude wants to use a tool that "needs approval". You can choose to allow once or always allow.

Data & privacy

The Instrumentl Claude connector accesses your grant data on your behalf using OAuth 2.0. Claude fetches data on demand as you ask — it does not bulk-load your full account at the start of a session. Instrumentl does not share data or sell user data to third parties. See Instrumentl's Privacy Policy for full details.
